How to Strap with Plastic

If you want to switch to strapping made from plastic, or your customer is making you, you will learn how here.

  1. Upgrade your strapping dispenser.  The core on steel strapping is 16″ x 3″, on most plastic is it 16″ x 6″.  Plastic strapping is 2X taller then steel strapping.  Check your current dispenser to see if there is an extra 3+ inches that the wing nut threads onto.  If not, buy a new cart.
  2. Determine strength of banding you need.  The easiest way it to stay with what has worked in the past.  If you use a 2,000 pound strap now, look for a similar strength plastic strap. Most people can slightly down grade strength, since plastic has more stretch then steel. The added elongation give a better impact resistance. However, be aware if elongation would be bad for your product (does your pallet need to be perfectly square?).
  3. Pick your strapping tools.  For less then 10 pallets per day, you should go with hand tools. For up to 100 pallets per day, go with battery powered strapping tools, or for high production volume use an automatic machine.  This linked page has lots of choices for plastic strapping tools.
  4. Find a good supplier.  Hopefully your supplier will be able to ship your order the same day it comes in.  Strapping becomes a high priority when you run out, so it is best to be able to get it quickly.
